We’d like to think the water we bathe and shower with is free of harmful chemicals, but what comes out of your faucet travels through miles of pipeline to reach your home. These pipes frequently contain accumulations of contaminants from years of use – so in addition to chemicals such as chlorine from water treatment facilities, your water may contain much more than you bargained for.
Let’s explore 5 reasons why you should install a shower filter, for an easy and effective way of improving your home water quality.
Chlorine exposure can be profoundly harmful for the human respiratory system. The chemical is classified as a halogen, which can irritate the walls of the respiratory system, potentially resulting in unpleasant complications to your health. Regular exposure to accumulations of chlorine fumes from hot showers can possibly lead to asthma and bronchitis.
Shower heads frequently contain high levels of mycobacterial concentrations, which can lead to a host of health issues including lung disease, according to a recent study conducted by Dr. Matthew Gebert of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado, Boulder and colleagues.
Dr. Gebert and co-authors worked with citizen scientists to study shower head biofilm samples and associated water chemistry data from 656 households located in the United States and 13 countries in Europe. They found that shower heads often harbor high abundances of certain mycobacteria.
“Bacteria grow and persist in biofilms coating the inside of showerheads and shower hoses despite the seemingly inhospitable conditions found in these habitats,” said Dr. Gebert. “In many cases, showerhead-associated bacteria must also be able to tolerate residue from the chemical disinfectants — including chlorinated compounds — which are often added to municipal drinking water to limit bacterial contamination.”
Shower head filters work to help remove chemicals such as chlorine and chloramine that are generally added to tap water to eliminate bacteria and other germs before they reach your faucet. This will prevent the abrasive chemicals from affecting your skin, diminishing the likelihood of skin irritation, rashes, hives and other harmful effects. A shower head filter also removes the heavy metals and chemical agents which contribute to dry, brittle hair, helping improve follicle health and diminishing those pesky “bad hair days”.
Consider the monthly costs of beauty products required to moisten dry, itchy skin or frizzy, chemically-damaged hair. Extensive beautification routines are often only essential when mitigating the damage done by other factors. In this case, poor water quality, tapwater contaminants and heavy metals can exacerbate a wide range of skin and hair conditions, as mentioned above. This is the platform by which an entire industry of “corrective” beauty supplies has been established. But if we all had improved water quality, imagine how unnecessary much of it would be!
Is your existing showerhead gunky and gross? The shower area tends to be a warm, humid environment – an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, mold and other germs which may pose health risks. Buildup of slimy residue from a dirty shower head gives irritants a place to hide, so they aren’t flushed out by the chlorine in the tap water. Unfortunately, these can be harmful as well as unsightly.
Removing chlorine from your tap water is more important than you may realize. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), households within the U.S. frequently measure elevated levels of chloroform in the air as a result of chlorine our tap water. Removing harmful chemicals which can become airborne through shower use can help eliminate the chlorine and therefore reduce the levels of chloroform in the air we breathe at home.
